Mathematics

Exploration of mathematical concepts are both kumu-planned and happens spontaneously throughout the daily life of the keiki and the classroom.  Rather than focusing on rote learning and using worksheets, our approach to mathematical thinking is multimodal, “a learning situation that engages multiple sensory and action systems of the learner.”  (Big Ideas in Early Mathematics, p. 9).

Our role as kumu is to design learning environments rich in opportunities to engage in mathematical problem-solving and exploration and to engage in “math talk”--conversations that help keiki make math connections among their real world experiences, symbols, pictures, and words.
