The Legacy of Kamehameha Schools
Kamehameha Schools, founded by Bernice Pauahi Bishop in 1887, is an institution grounded in Hawaiian and Christian values, and over the years has strategically placed itself in the forefront of generations of Native Hawaiian learners who live, work, think, create, and lead effectively as Hawaiians in their communities, as well as engage in global issues. The foundation upon which Kamehameha Schools’ legacy is based can be found in the following documents and resources that set the groundwork for much of Kamehameha Schools Preschools' mission. We invite you to peruse these documents and become familiar with their background information.
The Portrait of Pauahi with Keiki
Under the Tamarind Tree
The portrait of Pauahi, created in 2015 by Robin Racoma, is a beautiful depiction of Pauahi sitting under her favorite tamarind tree in her garden at Haleakalā. shows Pauahi surrounded by preschool-age keiki and a young couple with their infant children. The portrait is set in an oval-shaped frame with detailed leaves and fruit of the tamarind tree, and a colorful array of flora, especially roses, which many believe to be one of Pauahi's favorite flowers. It adorns every classroom and regional office within Kamehameha Schools Preschools.
