Personal & Social Development
Emotional and social competence are central to this domain. Kumu learns about keiki's sense of responsibility to themselves and others, and how they feel about themselves and view themselves as learners - their emotional development - through ongoing observation, conversations with keiki, and information from ʻohana members. Kumu acquires information about keikiʻs social competence and approaches to learning by interacting with them, observing their interactions with other adults and peers, and reflecting on how they make decisions and solve academic and social problems.

Powerful Interactions®
Research tells us that keiki learn through the interactions they have with their environment and with adults. Quality teacher-child interactions are essential to the Kamehameha Preschool Program. It is through these interactions that kumu extend and scaffold keiki’s learning. One of the strategies that facilitates effective teacher-child interactions is called Powerful Interactions®. A powerful interaction occurs when the adult connects with the child to learn about what the child knows and then takes what they know about that child to create an optimal learning experience.
Positive Behavior Support®
Positive Behavior Support (PBS) ® is a system that KSP uses to help children learn social skills and prevent challenging behaviors. It is a set of research-based strategies used to increase prosocial behaviors and decrease problem behavior by teaching new skills and making changes in a person's environment.
